The impact of big data on strategic business decision-making
Main Article Content
Abstract
The expansion of big data has transformed data into a strategic business resource; however, gaps in infrastructure, talent, governance, and digital maturity continue to limit its use in Latin America. This study aimed to analyze the impact of big data on strategic business decision-making, considering decision quality, competitive advantage, determining factors, and regional risks. An exploratory literature review was conducted using scientific literature, academic books, technical reports, and institutional documents published mainly between 2012 and 2025. Sources were examined through exploratory reading, thematic categorization, a synthesis matrix, and documentary triangulation. The results showed that big data promotes more timely, traceable, and predictive decisions while strengthening efficiency, innovation, and competitive responsiveness. Nevertheless, these benefits depend on data quality and relevance, strategic alignment, analytical competencies, organizational culture, and responsible governance. The discussion revealed that technology does not replace managerial judgment and may reproduce biases, opacity, and inequalities. It is concluded that big data generates sustainable value when integrated as an ethical and context-sensitive organizational capability supported by adequate technical and human resources.
